Course content

For over 30 years, the passive house standard has been setting the benchmark for energy-efficient construction. Legal minimum standards have increasingly aligned themselves with the passive house standard, and this standard, which was developed in Germany, is now also a global model. Anyone who wants to build or renovate buildings in a „holistic“ energy-efficient and economical way can learn from the passive house how components, details and building services can be optimally planned, calculated and executed. This is because a passive house requires a maximum of 15 kWh/m² of annual heating and cooling energy, which is extremely low and pays off many times over with clever planning – including in terms of the feel-good factor and the long-term value of the building!

Look forward to an exciting learning module that will teach you the basics of planning passive houses. How does a passive house work and how does it differ from other common energy standards? What criteria have to and which shall be complied with and why? How do you plan an economical passive house?

The German Energy Agency (dena) recognises the learning module "The Passive House Standard" with 6 UE (teaching units).

Learning objectives

The following learning objectives are to be achieved with this learning module:

  • Knowledge of the most important backgrounds: The need for energy-efficient construction
  • Ability to calculate with physical units
  • Ability to differentiate between work and power and forms of energy
  • Knowledge of the differences between the most common energy standards
  • Knowledge of the climate-independent definition of a passive house
  • Knowledge of the test criteria (mandatory criteria) for a passive house in a cool-temperate climate and the derivation of these criteria
  • Know which formulas are used to calculate annual heating requirements and how these influence planning.
  • Knowledge of the factors for optimisation
  • Know which planning recommendations can be used to meet passive house criteria
  • Knowledge of the quality requirements for a passive house (target criteria)
